Efficient and Durable Bolted Tanks and Silos

Bolted tank and silos offer a variety of options for storage and containment for optimal storage solutions. They are designed to be assembled quickly, for durability and for long-term or short-term storage solutions. RPM Builds sources and installs only the highest quality materials and the latest technologies to ensure the highest level of safety and quality. RPM Builds is the best bolted tank and silo provider and installer in the industry.

RPM Builds procures the most common types of bolted tanks: stainless steel tanks, carbon steel tanks, and galvanized steel tanks. All types of metal bolted tanks and silos offer secure containment and are designed to last for many years. Each product type has its own advantages.

Stainless steel tanks are corrosion-resistant and have a longer lifespan, making them ideal for storing water and other liquids.

Epoxy-coated carbon steel tanks are more cost-effective than stainless steel tanks, but they are not as durable and may require more maintenance.

Bolted Tank and Silo Options

RPM Builds souces two types of bolted storage solutions: Flat Panel Silos and Chime Panel Silos, both of which boast unique features and benefits.

CHIME-PANEL SILO DESIGN

CHIME PANEL SILO COMPOSITION

HRC carbon steel or Stainless Steel <1/2" thick and Aluminum up to 1/2" thick, overall design utilizes slightly thinner material with heavier stiffeners to add strength, using z-bar in product zone if required.

  • CHIME-PANEL SYSTEM: Chime Panel (CP) Silos, also known as flange-panels, are certified by API12B, and have been around since the early 1900s. CP Silos are renowned for their longevity and durability, particularly for heavy bulk materials and industrial through-put. While it may have been supplanted by its cousin the flat-panel silo, many clients still prefer it or supplier recommend it for specific situations.

  • DESIGN THEORY: Chime Panel silos are built with 8' tall x 5' wide rings connected vertically by an overlapping flange and horizontally by an external 90o flange, 2" wide. This construction forms a circumferential stiffener every 8' from top to bottom, ensuring the silo's stability under compressive and pressure load variations. The "block-masonry" style of panel orientation helps to improve the robustness of the design while eliminating straight vertical seams. However, it also complicates the installation process, requiring the use of jacks to ensure safe and effective silo erection, especially in conditions of heavy industrial throughput of high bulk density materials.

  • ORIENTATION: Panels are approximately 5' tall and 8'-10' wide. Flat panel designs optimize panel direction and strength due to reduced distance from point of connection and between rings, while seams running in vertical alignment further enables utilization of RPM's heavy-duty synchronized jack-lifting system.

  • INSTALLATION METHOD: Installation of Chime Panel silos requires the use of a crane, OSHA-approved scaffolding, a gin-pole, or an air-tugger in place of jacks. This can be beneficial in certain situations, such as “canning” or stacking of unbraced silo sections and lifting onto the previously installed section, as the external mounting flange provides both rigidity and a freely accessible radial bolting connection from the exterior.

FLAT-PANEL SILO DESIGN

  • FLAT PANEL SYSTEM (FP): Best of both worlds: Robust design, smooth-wall interior, rigid steel rings up to 1/2” thick, yet can utilize the jack stand erection system created for installing other, non-chime designs, benefiting from significant speed and safety improvements.

  • DESIGN THEORY: Eliminating the external flange simplifies the production process yet balances any loss of rigidity from losing the flange by utilizing significantly thicker sheet steel. Generally will not require stiffeners above the spring-line attachment point thereby using thickness to provide strength its reinforcement of the cylinder.

  • SAFEST INSTALLATION METHOD: Flat Panel silos provide unmatched safety and performance. RPM crews install panels from the ground level, beginning with the top deck and upper rings. As they carefully raise each 5' tall section, they make room to install the next ring segment. Upon reaching the bottom ring section, it is attached to the previously placed base ring assembly, and anchored to the foundation via anchor bolts.

Available in Capacities from 1,000 ft3 to over 170,000 ft3

No matter which type of product is manufactured (FP or CP), the tank walls and stiffeners must comply with the Tank Wall Design Critical Buckling Formula from the book Structural Analysis of Shells (Baker, Kovalesvsky & Rish, page 230). The tank product area should be designed using either Janssen's Formula or Cylindrical Bins.
